Hanging Rock Winery - Jim Jim Sauvignon Blanc Fume
‘The Jim Jim’ is a small mountain at 750m elevation, just near the famous Hanging Rock in the Macedon Ranges Wine Region of Victoria. By world viticultural standards, it is cold, producing wines that are very similar to those of the cooler regions of France and New Zealand but little like those of the warmer parts of Australia where this variety is often grown.
2023 was a cool, long vintage. Cooler days mean the grapes stay on the vines longer, so they develop more flavour and intensity. For this reason, 2023 may go down as one of the best vintages we have ever had. This is the first year Hanging Rock have labelled this wine Fumé. Fumé Sauvignon, traditionally, in France, was just another term for Sauvignon Blanc. In the 1970s, Robert Mondavi coined the term Fumé Blanc in California. Since then, it has come to mean Sauvignon Blanc fermented in oak. Our founders, John Ellis and Tim Knapstein, were the first ones in Australia to make a Fumé Blanc and even tried to trademark the name to no avail.
